AABRE is opening up a new competition for Research Subprojects.
Proposals will be entertained in one of the following categories:
- Neuroscience
- Molecular Medicine
- Drug Development & Delivery
- Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
Eligibility:
In Primarily Undergraduate Institutions, any biomedical researcher on tenure-track positions or equivalents can apply for these funds.
In Doctoral Institutions, only JUNIOR faculty members, in a tenure-track assistant/associate professor level can apply for these funds.
Researchers currently holding an AABRE Sponsored Research Subproject are NOT eligible to apply for these funds.
Please Note:
- Proposals will be externally reviewed and ranked.
- Funding will be contingent on availability of funds.
Document 1 Letter of Intent Deadline: July 1st, 2006 at 6PM.
Document 2 Proposal Deadline: July 15th, 2006 at 6PM.
Proposals should include a budget of no more than $100k of direct costs per year for three years. The indirect costs will be paid, but do not count for the $100k cap. Please clearly indicate the rate and modality for indirect costs in your budget as negotiated by your institution with PHS.
Two series of documents will be requested for each application. These documents are described in the following two sections and will each have its own deadline.
Document 1 Letter of Intent Deadline: July 1st, 2006 at 6PM.
The letter of intent should clearly state:
- name of the researcher and his/her affiliation.
- title of the project and the relevant AABRE category
- overview of the scientific subproject (no more than one page)
- name(s) and affiliation(s) for the mentor(s) researcher(s) at a Puerto Rican institution
- name(s) and affiliation(s) for R01 mentor(s)/collaborator(s) researcher at an institution outside of Puerto Rico
- letters of support from the President/Chancellor committing to 50% release time for research as well as sufficient and adequate laboratory space for project to be viable.

Document 2 Proposal Deadline: July 15th, 2006 at 6PM.
The complete final application will use the PHS398 forms, format and instructions. Electronic
submission will be made at http://aabre-proposal.hpcf.upr.edu
Instructions for submission will follow within next week.
A complete package will include:
Abstract (300 words)
For scientific subproject, describe the specific aims and the selected area of research along with the goals for the first year and for the long term. No more than 10 pages will be devoted to the scientific narrative. Literature cited will not be counted in the page limit.
Narrative may include:
- Describe the institution and the recognized needs in development of competitive research. Describe institutional commitments towards targeted researchers.
- Describe administration of INBRE at your institution.
- Describe short-term and long-term goals for institutional development in INBRE thematic thrust areas. If applicable, describe research infrastructure development and/or renovation.
- If applicable, describe outreach activities and/or undergraduate student development activities.
- Describe how the efforts of investigator will assist in the establishment of a multidisciplinary research network within your institution and/or within the INBRE network.
- Describe the potential impact of the proposed research plan/program on the faculty and students within your institution and the INBRE network as a whole.
- Budget (with justification) use forms from PHS 398
- Biosketches for key personnel use forms from PHS 398
- Letter of intent signed by President/Chancellor committing to 50% release time for researcher faculty as well as sufficient laboratory space for project to be viable.
- Letter of support from each mentor and collaborator.
